Would Government Sponsored Health Care Create A Moral Hazard?

People already binge drink, smoke, do drugs, over eat and under exercise and frequently become ill and seek medical care. (which is why health care is so expensive) Now if we know we get government funded healthcare people will be more encouraged to not take care of themselves as they know the taxpayer will take care of them. This will lead to even higher taxes to cover increasing medical costs and the vicious cycle will continue.

    Prediction, if we are unlucky enough for the government to control our health care system, the following election platform for both parties will be health care reform. I think Washington should concentrate on the root causes of the out of control costs and let the free market correct itself.

    Your statement about the main causes of our health care problems is correct but there are a huge number of problems that are very expensive that are caused by other means.
    Try genetic disorders. Very expensive and difficult to deal with. Often the causes are impossible to determine with current technology. – That’s just one. I’m sure you can make a long list of expensive medical conditions that are not caused by poor living habits.
    The rub is: If Government pays for our health care, every medical expense will become a political football that will be worse than abortion as a political issue to be dealt with every day in the newspapers and as campaign issues.
    OH! The Horrors!
    Since most people spend 95% of their life long medical cost output in the last year of their life, should we cut off their care and just let them die?
    If genetic disorders are expensive and difficult to correct and requires much expensive research, should we just prevent people from getting married and having children if they can’t prove they can do so without those children having genetic disorders?
    Smokers pay a lot of taxes and die quickly. They cost the health care system less than those who linger on dyeing slowly of “natural causes”. Should we encourage more smoking to help reduce expenses?
    Should the Government manage every aspect of your diet and your behavior so you can’t hurt yourself?
    Just keep Government OUT of health care!
