me and my good friend had this debate this afternoon. he says that if he doesn’t get sick often, he’s worried that he might end up paying more for lazy poor people without jobs. i feel that every american deserves it. we all deserve to see a doctor when we become sick. impoverished single-parent families deserve a health care plan for their children. my friend suggests, “they shouldn’t have had three kids,” which is a good point, but they have them and they all deserve health care. he said i wasn’t old enough to understand because i don’t pay taxes (he’s 18 and i’m 16). i told him that even if i did pay taxes, i wouldn’t mind paying taxes for the well-being of my people.

I am not for taking the work of one and giving it to another. When you make one person pay for someone else’s bills that is what you are doing. Would you feel the same if we forced people to go to others homes and paint, mow, do laundry?
Notice that two things out pace inflation year after year by a large margin: health care & education. Notice there are two things most americans don’t pay for directly? This is not a coincidence.
Why not do health care at the state level? Let me live in a state with the kind of coverage I want? Why force everyone in the US to fund it?
If government funded programs isn’t socialism what is? Please feel free to email me your anwsers.

I think we need to continue to provide Social Security to people already recieving checks. But we need to phase it out and have people save for their reitrement. I find it arrogant to tell someone how much they should save and to give them an allowance like they are a child.
The next argument is what about the poor? Instead of trying to pay their bills and fund their retirement why don’t we find out why they are poor and get them out of that situation?

Universal Health Care can be good… but if you think Obama is for that you have been mislead. He is not. He is for forcing your employers to provide you with Health Insurance. Big difference.
If you happen to work in a place exempt from Health Insurance you will be able to pay out of your own pocket a Health Insurance Plan provided by the Government.
Kids should be exempt and provided healthcare. After 16 you are on your own. But I don’t expect that from Obama either. sorry…

When you need health care and find that what you have as insurance doesn’t cover the costs, and you are filing bankruptcy because the cost of remaining alive was more than expected, then ask if government assurance that you have a medical insurance that works is a step toward socialism?
People need to ask themselves what the term “govern” means, and the dictionary has a good meaning for that word.
As for a country, governing means looking out for the better interests of all people, and influencing the direction of growth, expansion and controlling gouging to protect and benefit all, thus..end result the country as a whole.
Governing doesn’t include favoring the rich, although we know that rich tends to look after the rich.
The health of a country depends much on the health and productivity of the citizens and health affordability for all is a must!
The money that is going to Iraq in daily truck loads is pushing the country into near broke.

This Just shows how Naive that people are first Yes its is socialism you can’t take that argument way with a Magic wand Like liberals love to do but if you want real fact why Universal health care is bad lets look at the facts The Biggest Iit creates Even more government Graft & Bureaucracy & in the past says 25 years when has the government ever ran anything with efficiency that has really served the people !!!
Lets start with real life examples Russia has some worst medical service there are medicine cut with water waiting months for basic medical treatment.
England & Canada were its common for people to go to get basic surgeries in other countries so they don’t need to wait 6months to 2yrs
I was a Surgical tech for 5yrs & every time we saw patient from Canada who didn’t have a job or home here we knew that as soon as they could they were going back & stiffing the hospital with the bill . Then last but not least who do you think is going to pay for this you & me the plan is if you have health care that your paying for it now that you’ll still have to pay for that but you’ll also get your medicare taxes on your pay check raised to pay for those who don’t & lets just bring up the fact that we’ll be paying for the roughly 25+ million people who are not here legally I believe in charity but that’s why I donate to charities I should have to pay for that too? Also if they know that they can now get free health care won’t that make more of them come to even burden our over stressed system this why we need less government instead of more.

From what I’ve heard, one of the biggest knocks against universal health care is that the sick get sicker and the people on death’s door get the medical care they need. If you need emergency surgery, then you’ll get the medical care you need. If you get a sinus infection, it might take in excess of one month to get an appointment with a doctor who can give you Penicillin.

well first since you brought up socialism yes this country is a socialist country it has been for centuries. now even more with the government buying banks, home mortgages, insurance companies, small and large business’ so why not add health care to the list.
sure universal health care would be wonderful: however, with the way that our current country is set up it would not work. in the countries that have universal health care their tax rates are between 60-75%; also their doctors do not make huge salaries like they do here; you also cannot sue a doctor simply for malpractice, they would need to have gross negligence.
doctors here in this country need to pay back huge student loans, high insurance premiums, and have money set aside for legal affairs; its just part of the job.
if they did offer a national health care then i would approve of a system below 18 years old and above 60 years old. for those in between that’s their job to figure it out.
if they need to pay for it then how about collecting all the taxes from those that they know are not paying; landscapers, taxi drivers, carpenters, painters, housekeepers; waiters/waitress’; bartenders; etc…..

If 47 million people don’t have health insurance, I would rather try to find a way to make sure those 47 million people are still able to get health care. I do NOT want to create a system that covers all 305 million people in the US. If 258 million people already have health insurance, there is no need to create a gigantic, money-sucking, government bureaucracy to provide “universal” care.

I just really don’t want the government involved in any segment of my life as I think less government, better off. I do not think we are paying for elderly persons~most of that generation saved and earned and are reaping the reward. Social Security is a right that they paid into it for years. I voted for Obama don’t get me wrong, but some of this feeling of entitlement from others just doesn’t sit right with me. I am responsible for my choices and life, I don’t expect the gov’t to do things for me, nor do I trust it to do anything for me, unless it is take more taxes out of my paycheck.

I would think that such people have no concern for their fellowman or just don’t realize the need. Think it gives too much power to the government. Lessens quality health care.
Personally, I think it’s a shame that people in Thailand, Japan and Germany have a quality health care system in place for ALL people and the United States doesn’t.

Because the last two government social-welfare programs, Medicare and Social Security, are already about to go bankrupt. They’re also entitlement programs, so even if we don’t have the money to fund these programs anymore, that money will just be taken out of debt.
And our national debt is already horrifying.
We should at least fix Medicare and Social Security first!

If you want rationed healthcare like they have in Canada and the UK then it’s for you.
Just don’t complain when your loved one dies waiting for an operation they need, because they had to be added to a waiting list to see the mediocre doctors.

  13. Jon S said on Thursday, September 3, 2009, 17:12

Well mainly the cost of the program would come out of the pockets of those that already have health care via a job or retirement. I don’t mind paying for children to be taken care of, but I’m not going to pay for Bob the bum to have health care.

  14. Caesar Jeff said on Thursday, September 3, 2009, 18:10

There is already a government run children’s health care program.
Most of the uninsured are illegals, unemployed, or don’t want health care.
I prefer to take care of my family. Why should I have to pay for someone else’s health care who may not want it?

  15. DAR said on Thursday, September 3, 2009, 23:18

Because you are putting other people into economic slavery to pay your health care and are funding pharmaceutical companies and insurance companies rip off of taxpayers for too high prices. While as a practical matter eliminating choice of health care.

As far as my knowledge, this is a question with various answers,it is really depending on the mind of yourself, providing a great resource here http://www.HealthInsuranceIdeas.info/free-online-health-insurance.htm for reference though.

Besides the IRS can you name one Government agency that is run efficiently, cost effectively and without corruption?
Do you really want those people in charge of your HEALTH?

  18. sgtsweet said on Friday, September 4, 2009, 8:45

The worry is that the government should not be involved in our healthcare.
It’s always puzzled me that pro-choice folks are often for social medicine and pro-life folks are against it…

  19. egg_samm said on Friday, September 4, 2009, 13:31

Why would anyone be against the government giving me a free home?
Surely you don’t want me homeless and on the streets?

The problem is universal health care is a completely liberal idea from the start. We should not be talking about paying for other peoples health care but should talk about fixing the system we have. You can not apply the way health care is paid for to any other sector or type of business. When you go to the doctor or hospital and get a MRI or CAT scan do you ask the price? Do you ask how much a physical exam is? or a test for strep throat? I bet you have gone to visit someone and joked about the cheap gown they were wearing costing 100$ or more, or the food they were eating costing the same as a high end resturant. You were probably joking but you also knew it to be true. The fact of the matter is the runaway cost we the consumer have let the hospitals/ doctors charge and the insurance companies renegotiate!
Lets apply health care to the automotive field. You get a flat tire on the interstate and have it towed to my shop. I charge the state 1500$ for an emergency tow, 800$ for a tire, 200$ for the tech to change it, 100$ office visit , 50& for shop supplies and coffee and take 20 – 50$ for a co pay. Would people start screaming for universal car care then or should we just fix the problem.
I do not want elderly or poor people to have to suffer, I would love to find a way to help them out but I dont think extorting me to pay for someone elses over priced health care is the solution. I have used the system we have because I dont have a choice, but I think we need a different way to do the business of health care.
Also as I do not know you personally, I was not attacking you by saying “You” in the examples above. Just a generalization.
Edit- This question has popped in & out of my mind and conversation since I read it, Surprised to see it open still.
Think about this, if you went to tailgate your team over a weekend and went to Tennessee (Knox). Then surley you would rent a room, and eat out a few times. Price would be a factor , You would not (Most likely) take a room without first knowing the price. Also you would not eat at any resturant without looking at a menu and getting a fairly accurate range of your soon to be bill. You would know before hand if you were going to be staying at a low end escorts-a-plenty motel or a Ritz Carlton type or normal person hotel. You also will not be eating fondue if Burger King is the budget. What if the brakes on your car started grinding thursday before you left, would you call a half dozen garages getting estimates on a brake job? What if the radio went out, would you call every aftermarket radio installer in the phonebook looking for the best price on a replacement radio so you wouldnt have to ride in a think tank for 5 hrs each way?
I guess a few of MY questions is what if doctors had to have their own menu board of services. What if surgeons had to charge by the hour, What if you could compare prices from one hospital to another or one doctor to another.
What if we got the prices the health care charged out in the open for people to see. What if we saved the American public millions or billions by lowering the cost of health care. If we could do that I would love to talk about picking up the cost for the poor or elderly or underpriviledged or incompatant.
As it is though,as a small business owner I am already taxed to death, and the cost of my current Health care is overwhelming. Continually providing work for and paying the 7 employees I have, Workmans comp, Unemployeement, Insurance on my assets, Garage Keepers insurance, Liability, Auto insurance on My employees so they can drive a customers car, all of my business licences (city, county ,state and federal), the taxes I have to pay on the money the co. produced, then the money I paid myself, then for the co being in existence and all the local and state tax money I have to collect and transfer fee or interest free keeps me up late sometimes and will probably make me go gray early! I am sure I left a few out also.
So does the question ” Why would anyone be against universal health care?” have an answer? Well I for one say that any time you have Gov. doing ANYTHING for EVERYONE it is a bad idea!!! I already spend alot of money on taxes and programs designed to help the less fortunate people out already, It will be hard to get me onboard with this without first fixing somthing the cost involved!!!!
I also think we have unversial health care already, e-mail me if you want to have that debate.
