I think there is a little bit of dishonesty about the NHS in the UK every time this debate comes up in the US.
I acknowledge that the NHS is *far* from perfect.
However, particularly in last years US election campaign there were as a fair bit of manipulation of statistics and presenting of isolated failures as typical service.
It is an absolutely huge organisation, popularly quoted (as above) as the third biggest employer on Earth (certainly the biggest in Europe). While the NHS is a massive bureaucracy, treatment is solely decided on medical need not by a government bureaucrat.
… and one thing is certain in the UK – No one is refused health care because they can’t pay for it.

I don’t know of any person in America who does not have access to medical care upon completing a mountain of paperwork. All the other people have a job and can afford their own insurance or will get a subsidy program for low income. The ones who don’t work, make room for the ones who do. The ones who work will and the ones who don’t won’t.

Because universal health care kills. Take it from someone who’s oldest friend lives in Scotland and who’s father died from a simple foot infection because he was put on the waiting list for 4 months before he could see the doctor. He died within a week of being admitted to merely chopped off his foot to save the leg.
Then there’s my sil, from Canada, who developed leukemia in July and is now in remission. By her own admission, and her family still in Canada, she would have only months to live now because of having been put on a waiting list from treatment rather than starting intense chemo within three weeks of developing the disease.
Or another good friend in Mexico who had a parasite who wouldn’t think of going to the clinic for treatment because they rarely diagnose correctly.

capitalism. we capitalize on everything to get as much profit and keep profit. if we had socialized health care it would cost the US govt. lots of money which. and many US politicians have been bought off by greedy drug companies and insurance companies. and we’ve always had this internal fear of socialism/communism taking over.

Would you want some government bureaucrat to decide whether you needed an operation or if you needed to see a Dr? About an elderly loved one who couldn’t get appropriate care because of their age. Universal health care would ruin this country.

I don’t know if its an urban myth but I heard the NHS is the third largest employer in the world after the Chinese army and the Indian railways.
Imagine how huge the American version would be.

You can’t have both. Socialized health care removes competition which raises the cost. Not including constant government involvement.

I think our great new president will and his cabinet will do something about it.
Hillary tried to fix our broken healthcare system when she was first lady, but the powers that be didn’t allow it.

Because that would make taxes higher. Americans hate taxes.

I got an idea. Provide for yourself like the majority of Americans and stop looking for your handout!

I think President Obama is doing all that is possible in that direction.

Because health care in America has become a big business which cares for nothing except for the bottom line. ie-money
