There are many different forms of healthcare, but there is only one blue cross blue shield. One of the major issues today regarding the healthcare industry is the current opportunity for health care reform. Depending on what side of the spectrum your beliefs fall on, your thoughts about the reform are going to differ greatly. There are many strong opinions out there and it will take a lot of compromise to be able to find a good medium that will allow all people to afford healthcare. Read More

In recent times, there have been extraordinary events that put a pause on routine and threw our country into animated conversation but they have mostly been about bad news – 9/11, the invasion of Iraq and most recently the Wall Street bailout. The election was neither bad news nor a distraction like a celebrity meltdown, it actually mattered. And as a result of this incredible election season, America?s children have a chance to grow up unaware that there?s anything unusual about an African-American President or a woman running for the White House. Read More

With healthcare reform moving ever closer to reality, supporters and opponents are scrambling to add and subtract provisions. The Senate may take longer to vote than its House of Representatives counterparts, but debate is still going strong. Majority Leader Harry Reid is mediating battles over the public option, cost, illegal immigrants, abortion coverage…and prayer? Yes, apparently there is a clause in the Senate Finance and Health committees’ versions of the bill that would require health insurance plans to provide coverage for “religious or spiritual health care”, including prayer services. Such a provision brings up multiple questions. Mandated coverage has the potential to drive up premiums for questionable results. If it passes, such care would be also included in the public option, possible opening the government up to legal problems. Read More

In the article, “Why Doctors Are Heading for Texas,” Wall Street Journal writer Joseph Nixon builds a strong anecdotal case that “Over the past three years, some 7,000 MDs have flooded into Texas” because of “tort reform.” The argument is that in 2003 and 2005, Texas enacted a series of reforms of the state’s civil justice system to make it harder for people to file a number of different forms of liability cases, including medical malpractice, but also product liability cases. The result, says Nixon, is that doctors and businesses are flocking to Texas, leading to a dramatic increase in the number of doctors and a huge growth in the economy. We have already talked about the fallacy of economic growth figures in this context, but what about the flight of doctors? Read More
