No Medical Insurance: How Much For A Check-up And Prescriptions?

Somehow, after a series of unfortunate events, I was left out of my family’s insurance. So basically I have no medical insuranec whatsoever, but to get to the point:
I need to visit my doctor so I can get her to prescribe me anti-depressants, or maybe even just to have a check up so she can see how I’m doing and she can recommend what would be best for me.
My question is, since I have no insurance, what do I have to pay for, and how much will it cost? Are there hidden fees that I have to pay for? How about medication? How much will it all cost?
I live around San Francisco, California by the way. Just incase it matters.

I would call the local social services and try to qualify for help. You would be surprised how they can help you. I think that since you are on anti-depressants you would receive help quickly. You could also call a help line where people talk to you and they may be able to help or point you in the right direction. I pray that you find the help you need. I also have depression and I know how it feels to be with out your medication.

Your cheapest option is probably getting insured before you go to the doctor and have a diagnosis of some sort. Even then, be sure to disclose any symptoms you have on the insurance application. Without insurance, a doctor visit will probably cost you about $150 and anti-depressants will cost you maybe $200 a month depending on what is prescribed. There are several sites like healthpricer.com that can tell you what specific meds cost. Not a lot of “hidden costs” in what you are asking for. The only other thing the doctor may want to do is to get a blood test, which can also cost up to $500 depending on the tests.
