8 years Army, just went through medical discharge.. .Yes.. your military ID is your “tricare” id card for all intensive purposes.

Firechief and JJ Are right, the ID can be used as proof of insurance, however, you still should have a received a card from Tricare with her name on it and your name as her sponsor, it has the Tricare phone number on it and some other useful info, but seeing that the ID card has your SSN and thats what she is under in Tricare, the ID is suitable.
My daughter is 10 months old, b/c I am not married she has her own ID card, so if youre a single parent, your child can get a i.d. card (for the Army at least, not sure about other branches). I went to the ID card section when she was 3 months old and again last month to get an updated picture ID, so yes, single parents in the Army can get an ID card for their children.

You should get a tri care card that has your provider/primary care manager listed, Status (such as active duty family member) and effective date on it. Every time I have had to go to a doctor office or the hospital, proof of tricare insurance was requested. And a military ID does not prove that your daughter has insurance under you or is a dependent. But they can run a sponser social on the military ID at the hospital to prove insurance if it an emergency or you really need care. But get an insurance card just to make it easier for you. Contact Tri care or who ever you use for insurance through the military to get the proper documentation so you won’t have problems.

I work in an Emergency Room in Nevada and here, the military ID is accepted as the insurnace card. It is all our patient access staff ask for. There are other cards, such as Tricare for Life cards for those who are Medicare age or older, Tricare Prime, and others, but the military ID card is all we need to bill at our facility. Also, if memory serves me correctly, children under ten years of age do not get military ID cards. I am not sure if that is the exact age, but I do know that they are not issued to children under a certain age.
