My friend was employed by a medical transcription firm. She was tied to her computer from 7am to 7pm every day. She loved the work but had to sit for hours on end typing. She had one child, thought this would be great since she could stay home, but the work load is so demanding she had little time for her family. She is now working in a hospital with great benefits and working less hours for more $$. You have to have Medical Terminology classes and be a very fast typer. I would not spend any money on these types of classes.

Coding and billing are somewhat related… so once you learn the terminology you could consider all three fields. I was a home based transcriptionist for 13 years and loved it. I balanced the sedentary nature of the job by doing physical things for my breaks — like gardening, cleaning, painting, walks, bike rides, etc. I still work from home and it’s great. There’s a ton of real info on this career, including jobs on the website below. Totally free and no scam.

I am taking online classes right now through Ashworth college. I am taking 3 different courses. I am taking Medical Transcription, Medical claims and billing, medical and dental assistant. I just want to do all 3 so I have a big variety of options to do. Medical transcription in my opinion is a very good job if you want to work from home. (which I do for a few years at least until all my children are in school. ) YOu make decent money and you can work from home. You can work part time or full time. ITs up to you how much hours you want to work. YOu can work only 20 hours a week if you want but of course the more you work the more money you make. YOu can work for a doctor’s office, hospital anywhere and make what they pay their employees an hours. Which my friend works part time and started out at $16 an hour. Or you can contract yourself out and charge what you want to per line..like .12-.16 cents. so I think it would be a good career move at least while the economy is like this..good luck!
