Is Lack Of Medical Insurance A Good Reason To Not Go To The Doctor Even If You Know Something Is Wrong?

The answer to this question probably seems simple; however, for me it’s not. I don’t have medical insurance of any kind, and lately i’ve had the feeling that something’s not right with my body. I want to go to the doctor but at the same time I am scared it might be something thats going to leave me 1,000′s and 1000′s of dollars in debt. I really don’t have a lot of extra money right now and i’m trying to go to school. I don’t know what to do. On the one hand I want to go to the Doctor and find out what’s going on, but on the other hand, I don’t have the money to pay for it even if something IS going on. What do I do? I feel very helpless.

there are a lot of free clinics out there and there are lots of ways to see a medical doctor within your abilty to pay for services rendered. I however would definitely not go without seeing a professional about what is going on with me. So find a way !

You are better off going now and getting checked out than waiting. If may be nothing at all or something minor right now but if you wait it could be worse and then you will spend more money in the long run.

Generally in most communites there are free clinics I would start there or at your college infirmary’s nurse. You can also google your syptoms and try to figure out what is going on. I guess most county hopsitals have low income programs and it never costs anything to make a phonecall to ask.
For my money if you are sick enough go to a doctor there is no price too high for good health and most things are better off caught early on. Good luck to you.

You definitely need to go to the dr. No health problem should be ignored. I couldn’t afford health insurance so I got a discount medical plan. It’s about $30 a month and the savings can be 30-80%. I mean, its better than nothing and pre-existing conditions don’t matter.

You never ignore your health, especially when your body is telling you something’s wrong! Which is more important, a few more dollars and bad health, or a clean bill of health that can help you earn more later?

Go ahead and go. Your health is more important than anything… Explain your situation to your doctor (I’m sure he’s heard it before) and he should give you some options available to you. Don’t wait until it’s too late and things get worse, because then it will only be more expensive and difficult.
I know how you feel because I don’t have health insurance either, but luckily I am in good health (knock on wood.)

Do you think you might qualify for Medicaid (if you’re in the US)? You could apply for it, might take a while to get approved though. Without a list of symptoms I really can’t say I’ve any idea what might be wrong with you either. If you do think you have something seriously wrong, though, I’d say it’s better to spend the money now and find out what’s wrong and start treating it (hopefully as an outpatient) and be a couple thousand dollars in debt than to wait and let it get worse and end up in the hospital and have tens of thousands of dollars in bills to pay. Most medical facilities do want their money quickly, but often end up in situations like this getting paid a hundred here and there. You could be up front with them and work out some kind of payment plan.

I know not having any insurances is hard, but think about this: you know something is not right, but you don’t want to go to the doctor because you are afraid that the bills might be sky high, BUT what if you don’t go to the doctor and something major is wrong with you and it’s worse and by the time you do go it is to late. OR GOD FOR BID what if you don’t go then you die. Hospitals and most doctors offices have payment plans, and you can pay very little every month. Try it. good luck!!!!!!!

go to a county health hospital…they are obligated to give you care and if its anything serious they will tell you payment plans or whatever else you may need to accomodate you rneeds

    Go to:http://www.justanswers.com
Read the rules, explain your symptoms and suspicions as clearly as you can, and ask a doctor or nurse for a course of action. It might cost you $10 or $15. I’ve used it. It works.

All the same, you should go. If there IS something wrong with you, you don’t neccesarily have to do what they tell you. I mean, if something’s wrong and they want you to get some kind of treatment you can’t afford, either say no or ask them to help you find another, cheaper way to deal with it. They’re doctors, their goal is to help you be healthy whether you can afford it or not.

Go to the county health clinic.

You need to go. There are many medical clinics that cannot refuse to treat you if you do not have the money to pay. And they also will set up payment plans. If you can only afford $5 a month, then that is what they will have to accept. Think of what the alternative might be….You want to finish school I’m sure.

If you feel something is wrong go see a doctor. You can always get assistance or a medical card in some cases and if not you can set up a payment plan and just pay what you can.

Well, is it a good reason? I don’t know. Part of me agrees with you. I was between jobs several years ago and without health insurance when I had pulmonary emboli, a potentially fatal condition. Being a nurse, I knew something bad was wrong, but I put off going to the ER for several days even though I was having cardiac type chest pain and was short of breath all the time. People are gonna think I’m nuts, but part of the reason I put off going to the ER was that I knew it was bad, and part of it was financial. I wound up in the hospital for almost a week after I went to the ER. I still owe a lot of money there, but my credit sucks anyway, so I honestly don’t worry much about it.
