how will an expat employee let his boss know that he needs a; family medical insurance rather than personal medical insurance

usually u contact the benefits dept………..Human resources……….
if there are only 2 or 3 people in the company.speak to your boss

well, i’m not real sure of the situation, but if you are already an employee with insurance, you usually can only add family members at the beginning of a contract year
unless you are recently married, just had or adopted a child, or your family members recently lost access to another insurance policy….
just ask your boss or write him an email

Usually employers have several medical coverage options (ie. single, single + kids, family). Just choose the one that’s appropriate for you.
If your employer only offers single coverage there’s not much you can do. (Welcome to the US!)
