Are you American or Canadian?
In Canada there are several reported cases of people litterally dying waiting for care on waiting lists and/or in emergency waiting rooms. IF people had personal medical insurance they could pay the expenses to have their treatments done somewhere else that is less busy…which would distribute the overload from some health centers to over that are less busy.
If you are writing the paper from an American prospective and saying there should be free universal health care like it is done in Canada, that’s a tough arguement. As a Canadian I can tell you that our health care is a disaster (as mentioned above). Long wait times, poor service (becuase if you don’t like it, you don’t have any other options, etc). I currently have personal insurance for some serious conditions that I pay for becuase I have no faith in the free stuff that’s provided. I would rather have the insurance so I can go to a different location or country to get the service I require immediately rather than waiting months.
Example: I twisted my knee in December 2007. The waiting list where I live was 8-10 months JUST to see a specialist to determine the extend of the injury, then decide whether surgery is an option or not, which would put me on a waiting list again for the surgery. I know have an appointment on Oct. 20 with the specialist for the initial follow up (almost 10 months to the day!) where they will assess how bad my knee actually is. In June, a football player in our city twisted his knee up and was in and out of specialists within days and was in and out of surgery within 2 weeks. He had insurance coverage that allowed him to afford to pay the bills elsewhere.
Just my opinions…free health care does not mean good health care. I would take good health care over poor health care any day.
