The treatment was about 25 years ago and I was a minor. Any ideas on how to access these records? Thanks! AP

They only have to keep the records for 10 years, so it is unlikely you will be able to get them. You could contact each and see what they say. If they have them, you will have to pay to have them printed out.

Most JCAHO standards are that medical records be kept for 7 years, then they are destroyed. Some practices will hold on to them longer than that if they were digitized, but all you have to do is contact the Medical Records department of the hospital or doctor’s office and they’ll be able to tell you if they have your records. You’ll have to sign a release to get them, and they can’t continue information about any other person, including family members.

Yeah, I’m not sure they would still have these records. Call the hospital and ask to speak to the records dept. and I would ask a general question of “how long do you keep patient files?” Cuz per law, they are only required to keep for so long and I believe it is 10 -12 years but know it is less than 25. I could be wrong though, give it a try. Or you could try going to the hospital if you live near it and talking directly to the records dept.

most places keep records for 10 years. if you know the dates of service, and the location you can contact them. you may have to go in person. show an id and sign a letter or release. they may charge you for the copies. it should not make a difference that you were a minor. good luck. a lot of records “get lost”
