I need to go to a Dr. but I am scared that I am going to end up owing thousands of dollars for a few regualar Dr’s visit. I have tried to find some affordable health insurance online, but most of them are very pricy and out of my budget. I am young and healthy, don’t drink or smoke. I hope to find a decent health insurance plan that I can actually afford. Any suggestions? Thanks.

There ARE short term plans that cover Dr. visits. my short term plan covers everything but maternity, and has unlimited rewrites, so I am not only limited to 6 months of coverage. It also came with a discount card on dental, vision and Rx. I shopped around for a good short term plan and have been on the Secure STM for a few years now. I don’t pay co pays and have never had a problem with them. My plan runs me around 110 a month. You can apply online at http://www.ShortTermHealthPlan.com or calling 800.647.4589

Did you have your primary insurance thru an employer?
Then you can apply for COBRA thru your employer. You take over the cost of the entire monthly premium and pay a minimal administrative fee. You can keep it for 18 mos. with an additional 6 mos. if your employer is amenable.
That’s for NYS anyway, but I think it’s a federal law.
If you belong to any alumni assoc.; professional assoc; fraternal org; or are self employed you might be able to find group insurance which is cheaper.
Otherwise, look up insurance in the yellow pages & call co.s and compare prices.
Good Luck

If you need affordable health insurance then I wouldn’t suggest going on Cobra unless you have a pre-existing condition. Cobra is a continuation of your group plan that you can carry for 18 months, but you are paying for the whole amount of the insurance cost. If you don’t have a pre-existing condition, then you can find affordable rates online. If you are young and healthy like you say you are then you should be able to find rates in the 100-150/month range.
The other option would be to take out a short term medical insurance plan which are generally pretty cheap. Usually you can take these plans out for 6 months at a time. But they don’t cover doctor’s office visits. It would only be for hospital and surgical expenses.
Short Term Coverage is usually between 25-50 dollars a month. It should at least get you through til you find anohter job that provides insurance.
