The best water treatment system is a multistage device that removes chlorine, lead, THMs, VOCs, drugs, pesticides, herbicides, cancer causing chemicals and parasitic cysts. I have read a great deal about all of these different contaminants and I know how they can affect my health. Do you?

Chlorine has been in use for about a hundred years. It isn’t the best water treatment system, available, but it does kill bacteria and algae. It also prevents some waterborne illnesses and it seems to be the only option that big facilities have for “cleaning the pipes”.

But, judging by the number of new cancer cases that are attributed to THM exposure each year, they may need to rethink that.

In Canada alone, researchers estimate that there are over 700 new cases of bladder and colorectal cancer each year. The cause is chlorination and THM exposure.

The best water treatment system for homeowners will remove THMs through a process called adsorption. You need to remember that a filter for your shower is necessary, because THMs are gaseous. They are a known cause of indoor air pollution and the level becomes particularly high in small shower stalls.

You may find that the best water treatment system for your home is one that filters all of the water that comes into the house. Sometimes it’s a more economical choice than separate devices for the kitchen, bath and shower.

But, the multistage devices that remove the widest range of contaminants are only available in the smaller kitchen and showerhead filters. A whole house filter may only remove chlorine and some of the chemical contaminants. They will not remove cysts, because they only filter down to five microns. You need submicron filtration for cysts.

Cysts are hard to kill by any method other than boiling. They sometimes “slip” into the water supply when nobody’s looking. They cause illness in the strong and death in the weak.

Facilities don’t test for them as often as they probably should. So, just to be safe, the Environmental Protection Agency recommends point-of-use submicron filtration.

In order to remove lead, you need ion exchange. When chlorine cleans the pipes, it also eats away at the lead lining and the solder used at the joints. So, in many homes, lead contamination is a problem. In the young, it causes learning disabilities and brain damage. In older people, it causes nutritional deficiencies, high blood pressure and heart disease.

As long as you buy the best water treatment system, with multiple stages and filters, you will be safe from all of these health issues. Now, you have answers.
