my boyfriend was fired last week monday, he has a medical condition and we need to know if he still has insurance. my mom said they have to cover you up to 30 days after you’re fired, but he was fired on bad terms and is not speaking to the company. we need to know if he’s still insured before purchasing additional insurance.

It depends on how the policy was set up with the employer in the first place. Most of the time, it’s either until the day after termination, or the last day of the month in which you worked. In either case, he has no coverage now.
Obviously, your mom doesn’t have an insurance license. She’s dead wrong.

Your employers policy is what determines how long he is covered after termination. This documentation is probably in paperwork he recieved when he was hired. The insurance will probably not be able to tell him how long his coverage will be in force, since they recieve that info from the employer. If his employer group had more that 20 employess, he will be offered COBRA coverage. However, his employer will no longer be contributing their portion of the premium, so although he will have the same benefits, he will have to pay the full premium. If he really needs this info (and it’s important to know this and when he can expect his COBRA paperwork too!), he will have to call the employer and ask.

usually till the end of the month of firing. My friend’s husband got fired the last week of the month, fell out of a tree on the 1st of the next month… had to apply for medicaid.
your boyfriend will be offered COBRA (continuation of his insurance for 18 months), which costs$$$$ but would be worth it if he has medical issues.
Check with your local social services, he may be eligible for medicaid or payment of the COBRA. Dont wait till the last minute though.

I quit a job once and it was not until I gave my 2 weeks notice that I learned that my medical, dental, life insurance all of it would be cancelled on midnight of my last work day.
He may qualify for COBRA but that is super expensive.
He is most likely no longer insured or will be uninsured very shortly.
Maybe he has an insurance card with a customer service phone number on it? Call that number and get the info he needs.
