I want to get a breast reduction. I am 38 DD, 5’7″ inches, 150. I have back problems and my bra straps cut into me. How do I go about getting a doc to say its medically necessary and getting it covered by insurance. How do I go about this? If anyone has done it, what did you do to get it covered?

This will be something you will need your doctor to call the insurance company and talk with them about. If its cauding you back problems then you need to have the doctor say that. Also call your insurance company and let them know the situation yourslef. This is considered cosmetic and it isnt something that they usually would cover..It may take some work..SO good lcuk!

You will need a physician to go to bat for you. If you are developing a medical condition (back problems) due to the breast issue, your physician can begin to make the case. Insurance companies hate paying for anything that they consider “cosmetic”, but will consider it if they think it could save them money in the long run, such as reduced expenditures on back problems.
Whatever you do, make sure you have an authorization from your insurance in writing before you have the procedure done.

I have heard that if you are a H-cup or larger, the insurance companies will cover the cost of breast reduction, but your measurements normal.
Are you wearing good quality bras and are they the correct size? Have you been measured by a bra-fitting professional for a store that offers many different makes/styles (not victoria secret, JC Penny’s etc). BraSmyth with multiple loactions in the NYC area is my favorite. I’ve found that the bra style/quality can help a lot with a bra’s fit/enjoyment.

Maybe you can avoid surgery by getting rid of the real cause of straps cutting into you and back ache – the bra. Bras serve no useful purpose being only fashion accessories. No matter what size you are Mother Nature knew what she was doing and your body can cope braless, women have for thousands of years before this useless invention.
Bras take the weight of the breast like a sling thus weakening the ligaments around the breast but after a while of going braless these will strengthen. Your back/shoulder pain will be gone, no more nasty straps and also minimizing risk of cancer (link of bras with breast cancer).
For more help and women’s experiences look at goingbraless.net/Forum3.
What have you got to loose? you can try for yourself and take it from there. Hope this helps.

Hey!!…my insurance just approved mine last week!!…I am a 38 DDD and i have the same problems as u…I just went to my doctor and asked him if he think a breast reduction would help with my back and he said yes and refered me to a plastic surgeon…and the plastic surgeons office handled all the paper work to get it approved…it took about 6 weeks and now I go in for the surgery on the 24th of this month…I am very excited!
)
so yes!!, they can and probably will approve it!!…go for it girly and u can feel free to email me about any questions about the process or after my surgery I will answer anything about that as well
GOODLUCK!
oh and by the way…my doctor said that most ARE approved if there is back pain…(he said it costs them more in the long run to pay for doctors visits and pain meds and other treatments then to do the surgery

Doesn’t make a difference if a doctor says it is medically necessary or not. A breast reduction is considered optional surgery and won’t be covered under most health insurance plans. Do you realize that, if your sort of ploy were accepted, ALL breast reductions would be ‘medically necessary’ ?

I do not think any company covers such expenses or shall allow such surgery.
But a few companies are there who never ask any question for what you have admitted to hospital, they simply pay for all the expenses but I do not have any such experience.
You should better either check from the various players of this industries’ web site or call any agent and he/she may be able to explain all.

make a consultation appt with a plastic surgeon for a breast reduction. s/he will take all the steps and take pictures and send it to your insurance company for approval.
good luck!

Have your dr contact the ins co for pre approval. The key is ” back problems”: which means this is not being done for purely cosmetic reasons. don’lt worry, your dr knows how to play this game.
