I am respiratory therapist and a hyperbaric technologist. I have two bachelor degrees and working on a masters. I have been working out of the home and now want to stay home with my daughter (my husband is going back to work-he has been home with her). I want to transition into medical transcription to that I can work out of my home. Is there anyway to do that without going back to school to get another degree? I keep looking on the internet and I can’t seem to weed out what is legit and what is fake.
TIA!

With your degrees and knowledge you may not have to go back to school. Look at your newspaper for jobs and let them know you back ground I’m sure you can start right away, they love someone like you.
I’m going through Allied school my friend started it first and invested them by talking to BBB so I’d say research your school as much as possible before paying for classes. Good luck

You are wise to be careful about training options. Okay, you obviously know anatomy and terminology, so in my opinion (and I work in the field), you need a quality but quick training course. I went through Meditec.com and they have an internship program to help you get working right away. You don’t need a huge big year or two long program.

Obviously you have some of the talents you will need, spelling and grammar. If you wanted to work in a doctor’s office your credentials might be sufficient. However, if you want to work from home it will be necessary for you to receive additional training. Remember that as a medical transcriptionists you must have an extensive medical vocabulary. Nurse’s training doesn’t even provide the extent of terminology that you must use.
You can receive the training via the internet, you can study at your own pace and if you applied yourself, I would estimate you might be able to complete the course in as little as 2 months. I cannot stress enough though that if you decide to get the necessary training, be very careful of the school you choose. Make sure that they have real transcription company affiliates who really hire their graduates. Some of the schools advertising on the internet tell you they have job placement assistance. Often this is no more than giving you a resume and a list of companies that might hire you. More than likely this would net you nothing as most legitimate companies want either 2-5 years experience or graduates from their affiliate schools.
This is a very lucrative career if you are focused and self-motivated. Working at home makes it easy to be distracted. You must remember if the keys on the keyboard aren’t moving, you aren’t making money as most work-at-home transcriptionists are paid on production. According to the U.S. Labor department this is one of the careers that is expected to grow by 16% between now and 2015. Good luck!
