I’m a licensed massage therapist and I don’t have any benefits because I’m kind of like an independent contractor. I took a part time job working with autistic and/or mentally retarded adults because after 3 months they give medical benefits to their part time workers. The problem is the individuals are known to sometimes be violent and I’m scared one day I’ll get hurt and I won’t be able to perform either job. Is it worth it to stay and take the risk? It seems impossible to find part time jobs with benefits and I don’t want to stop massaging because I really love it.

Try going online and look up Blue Cross Blue Shield, they will have different plans on their website. You go through some questions which evaluate what you can afford and what would be best for your situation (single, married, kids etc). There are a couple plans for single individuals that will run you about 85-120 a month.

I live in PA. Blue Cross has health insurance that starts at $120/month and covers everything. It’s called Special Care plan C. They are probably in all states. Look in the yellow pages and call them. This plan is if you earn less than I think $19,000 a year. It could be more than that. You’ll have to ask them.
